BMW’s timing chain problem comes back to haunt carmaker
Timing chain jumped off track and ruined the engine. No signs leading up to this event. Cost more than car.Why is my mouse wheel not scrolling
I had to scrap it. A catastrophic problem occurred with my BMW, a I model, while I was driving on a busy expressway. A warning message indicated the oil pressure was low. As I attempted to navigate to the shoulder, another message stated there was a drive-train malfunction. The car proceeded to decelerate. I was driving my vehicle on the highway and a drive train malfunction indicator was displayed on the screen.
The car immediately lost all power and I was forced to pull over on the side of the road. I towed my vehicle to the closest certified repair shop.Like Like.
Should I be concerned? Thanks for the update! Those shiny marks are a good indicator. Did you see them in all cases when timing chain starts acting up? Was there any sludge on the engine, or anything else that may be the reason why chain may be failing? If only I saw this earlier. Curious as to the model years of the engines shown above and mileage.
There is alot of concern obviously as to how BMW is handling this with regards to warranty. Some heresay that BMW will cover this even if the car is out of warranty since its a known problem. Any evidence to the contrary? Is BMW looking for reasons to deny this repair? Hallo mate. Hope you all right.
I have question? Do I need to take the engin out to change that chain? And is it hard to lock cam shafts and vanos? I would be grateful for a little help. Thank you.Diagram based harley davidson fuel pump diagram
Thank you for answer mate. Is it complicate? And you say I need special tools to do it? This is not a easy job to do at home,,the oil pan also has to come off,the job pays me 10 hour labor plus parts.Worth giving the dealers a call and checking if your car falls under the recall — if one dealer fobs you off, call another.
Just rang my BMW dealership. No issues with mine. It's only on certain n series engines I brought mine into my dealer as I was getting my rear right light done under Quality Enhancement on my 09E I did get them to check my timing chain and they gave it a 5 on their scale. So nothing to worry about for moment. Required rear light bulb holder work - causes bulbs to fail. Thanks for posting this. I contacted my dealer a few weeks ago when this first appeared in the German market.
Humm, I'm new to all things BMW. I have a i E Does this apply to me? Was in a different dealer today for another matter and asked about this. They checked my VIN but said my car wasn't affected, which surprised me. I have an 08 d with N47 engine.
They did know about the enhancement though and said they'd been pretty snowed under with cars in for this work, mainly 1 and 3 series apparently. I'm not too bothered just now as my car doesn't have any of the symptoms that go with a loose chain.
Good to know though that they've recognized the fault now and if it does develop the issue then they can't really get out of fixing it as a warranty. Just to double check I'm not being fobbed off. BMW dealer was BSing you! That was the only criterion to put the car in the "high risk" region.
According to that report, chains and tensioners had to be replaced, plus the cylinder head had to be removed in order to mark top dead centre precisely, and put it back with a new gasket. I had a funny feeling he was bs'ing me when he said the N47 was even in some petrol cars! Now that I knew was incorrect! Looks like I'll need to call someone else and then go back to them if I manage to get the correct answer from there!
I had a proposal from my dealer to go through with the overhaul during the last service, but I'm very reluctant. It's a quite extensive work on the car and I hope there will be certain early signs of wear on the chain I hope! No, not really. The only problem is that there have been so many different fixes from BMW, that makes you wonder.
If you decide to proceed with their recommendation, there could be another fix within 3 months. Twelve months ago, BMW would only replace the big tensioner.
Then they would go with both chains, tensioners, maybe sprockets and cylinder head removal. What's next? The statement "according to VIN selection" does not imply that certain vehicles with N47 are affected and certain vehicles aren't.This Has been a big subject with everyone on my blog, some of you guys have been asking about the bulletin about this repair,so this is the BMW bulletin that us technicians work with,I hope this helps some of you guys.
I have a X1, I had heard the timing chain whine get worse over the winter, so I parked the vehicle the end of May, and slowly ordered the parts and the timing chain lock out kit for my mechanic.
It was a good thing I did, I was talking to him the other day and he said the the top right timing chain guide had failed and was just kind of floating around. He said there were bits of plastic in the bottom of the oil pan. Like Like. I have a i with 85k miles, mostly highway if that makes any difference. Serviced at 80k as usual, with nothing appearing.
Sure enough, 85k lead to another Low Oil Pressure warning light. Towed to BMW dealership, and 4. The question I have, is what questions to ask? I have researched as much as I can, but want to know what else to ask to be replaced whilst they are in there.
Oil Pump Chain? Anything else? I understand the risks of owning a BMW compared to a generic car, but to think that another four-figure repair bill could pop up is nerve wracking to say the least. Unfortunately, I put way too many miles into the car which had lead to me being upside down in it anyway compared to my loan. Hello — I stumbled upon this page and am so appreciative. I started getting this whine and saw your post and the SIB you posted.
I understand they will replace the timing chain and guide rails and oil pump chain and guide. But I want to be smart when they call me and try to hit me up with other non-warranty issues. What else could they possibly find that may not be covered due to this issue? I suppose they could suggest I change the oil pump?So how do you find out what problems are occurring?

I took the car to valley BMW in modesto, ca, on November After on extensive diagnostic evaluation, they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. The only suggestion was to replace the car's battery. I took the car to batteries plus bulbs for a second opinion. They determined that the battery was still in good condition and did not need to be replaced. The drive train malfunction continued to appear when driving on highway.
In a subsequent visit to the dealer, I again mentioned the issue with the drivetrain malfunction warning still apearing on the display panel. On a trip to san francisco, we experienced a major engine break down. The car had completely shut down. Fortunatly, we had just exited the highway. We then had the car towed to petter pan BMW dealership and they concluded that indeed the engine had experienced a major breakdown, in their evaluation, they also noted the battery was in good condition.
This completely contradicts the claim by valley BMW that the battery was the issue. Since then, I have found out that there is a class action lawsuit against BMW for a defective N20 engine which is the engine in my car.
As expect BMW refused to accept any responsability for the deffective engine. Once I brought up the class action lawsuit, BMW cut off all communications with me. My family and I are asking for your support in investigating BMW on this deffective motor and holding then accountable for such poor and negligent behavior, please help all affected customers with this terrible and devestating situation.
Drivetrain malfunction light came on and now the car takes a long time to get up to any decent speed. Probably in about 10 seconds. Overpriced scheduled maintenance and costly repairs were all performed as they should have been. Six months I started hearing a high pitch noise and it only got worse over the few months. It flashed an error message on the display very briefly and it appeared to be "drive train malfunction".
Before I could take my phone out and take a picture of the screen, the error screen vanished. I presumed the "error" would be saved in the system and shut the engine off, restarted and started to drive and proceed. At both these times there were cars behind me and I turned on the hazard light to warn the other drivers of my inability to drive. I took the car to two BMW service centers. One of the service managers said he cannot say what the issue is without doing a diagnosis, but the probable cause is something to do with tha oil-pump or the cam-shafts and related to timing.
I took the car to another service center and here I left the car behind for a specific diagnosis. I was told the issue is related to timing chain and plastic parts that hold the chain in place, deteriorate over time.
Incidentally, few months ago there were other plastic parts that hold the engine in place also deteriorate and it was shaking the car. I had replaced them at a certified mechanic. To find a BMW Center, try a new search or visit one of the locations by expanding the list results below.

If needed, the dealers will replace the chains, along with all accompanying hardware. The problem: Timing chains on N63 engines have been found to stretch and wear out prematurely, resulting in premature valvetrain wear and reduced engine performance. Corrective action: BMW has come up with a test procedure to determine timing chain wear.
Dealers will perform this test in conjunction with the N63 Customer Care Package, which is designed to ensure proper long-term engine operation. After this test has been performed, dealers will replace the chain as necessary, along with all accompanying hardware, including the chain tensioner and hardware as well as the chain sprocket.
