As I attempted to navigate to the shoulder, another message stated there was a drive-train malfunction. The car proceeded to decelerate. I was driving my vehicle on the highway and a drive train malfunction indicator was displayed on the screen.

The car immediately lost all power and I was forced to pull over on the side of the road. I towed my vehicle to the closest certified repair shop.Like Like.

Was there any sludge on the engine, or anything else that may be the reason why chain may be failing? If only I saw this earlier. There is alot of concern obviously as to how BMW is handling this with regards to warranty. Some heresay that BMW will cover this even if the car is out of warranty since its a known problem. Thank you for answer mate. Is it complicate? And you say I need special tools to do it? This is not a easy job to do at home,,the oil pan also has to come off,the job pays me 10 hour labor plus parts.Worth giving the dealers a call and checking if your car falls under the recall — if one dealer fobs you off, call another.

Just rang my BMW dealership. No issues with mine. It's only on certain n series engines I brought mine into my dealer as I was getting my rear right light done under Quality Enhancement on my 09E I did get them to check my timing chain and they gave it a 5 on their scale. I have a X1, I had heard the timing chain whine get worse over the winter, so I parked the vehicle the end of May, and slowly ordered the parts and the timing chain lock out kit for my mechanic.

It was a good thing I did, I was talking to him the other day and he said the the top right timing chain guide had failed and was just kind of floating around. I took the car to valley BMW in modesto, ca, on November After on extensive diagnostic evaluation, they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. The only suggestion was to replace the car's battery. I took the car to batteries plus bulbs for a second opinion. They determined that the battery was still in good condition and did not need to be replaced. In a subsequent visit to the dealer, I again mentioned the issue with the drivetrain malfunction warning still apearing on the display panel. On a trip to san francisco, we experienced a major engine break down. The car had completely shut down. Fortunatly, we had just exited the highway. We then had the car towed to petter pan BMW dealership and they concluded that indeed the engine had experienced a major breakdown, in their evaluation, they also noted the battery was in good condition.

This completely contradicts the claim by valley BMW that the battery was the issue. Since then, I have found out that there is a class action lawsuit against BMW for a defective N20 engine which is the engine in my car.

As expect BMW refused to accept any responsability for the deffective engine. Once I brought up the class action lawsuit, BMW cut off all communications with me. My family and I are asking for your support in investigating BMW on this deffective motor and holding then accountable for such poor and negligent behavior, please help all affected customers with this terrible and devestating situation.

Drivetrain malfunction light came on and now the car takes a long time to get up to any decent speed. Probably in about 10 seconds. Overpriced scheduled maintenance and costly repairs were all performed as they should have been. Six months I started hearing a high pitch noise and it only got worse over the few months. It flashed an error message on the display very briefly and it appeared to be "drive train malfunction".

Before I could take my phone out and take a picture of the screen, the error screen vanished. I presumed the "error" would be saved in the system and shut the engine off, restarted and started to drive and proceed. One of the service managers said he cannot say what the issue is without doing a diagnosis, but the probable cause is something to do with tha oil-pump or the cam-shafts and related to timing.

I took the car to another service center and here I left the car behind for a specific diagnosis. I was told the issue is related to timing chain and plastic parts that hold the chain in place, deteriorate over time.
